Trivia Recap Oct. 21, 2014 (Powell’s Pub)

A trio of ‘Pods decided to dangle their toes in the water at Ypsilanti’s Powell’s Pub for My Trivia Live, winning no prizes but gaining a new page follower, thanks Mike! The conversations about AFI lists and top-grossing film franchises were very enjoyable, and we look forward to meeting you in trivia battle again. Let’s just hope we get the hang of the final question wagering, which is quite different than what we are used to with Sporcle. And perhaps a slightly friendlier final question category than talk show hosts…
Moving on to the questions, which may be slightly abridged:
1. TV: What did Dwight from “The Office” and his cousin Mose grow on their farm?
2. Music: What Canadian singer founded Lilith Fair in 1996?
3. Movies: What ’98 movie had a D-Day landing scene so realistic that visits to post-traumatic stress disorder clinics rose after its release?
Aced all of these…on to round two
1. Disney: What was the better known name of Princess Aurora?
2. What computer hardware outfit ditched retail for mail-order and became the top direct sale vendor?
3. SCIENCE: What is the process of treating rubber to harden it? Bonus points opportunity – what is added to silver to make it “sterling” silver? Didn’t come up with “bonus” answer.
Round three
1. History: What 17-year-old girl led the French Army in the Siege of Orleans? Really?
2. Sports (ugh, we didn’t have our “sports guy” Brad): What hall of famer is known as “Mr. Cub?” And Brad would have known this one…
3. Novels: What novel ends with this quote: “It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.” And we picked the wrong Dickens novel.
Half time – we were in first with 29 points at the end of the half, out of six teams playing.
Name 4/5 film actors, including animated films, who have appeared in the top 100 highest grossing movies (domestic) according to Box Office Mojo? Managed to get three of them.
Round four
1. History: What two countries fought in the 100 years war?
2. Sports (double ugh…damn you Brad for going to that steampunk event instead of helping your trivia comrades 😉 ) What hall of fame center is the only center in NBA history to lead the team in assists for the entire season? Brad would not have known this anyway…
Other questions (we’re not totally familiar with MTL format yet, so bear with us)
1. What Oscar winning musical is based on the play “Pygmalion?”
2. What unit of electrical power is equal to one joule per second? Miss.
3. What was the only X-rated movie to win the Oscar for best picture? The rating was later reduced to “R.”
4. Who was billed as the “killer of Custer” in Buffalo Bill’s “Wild West Show?”
5. What company has used the slogan “Reach Out and Touch Someone?”
Dropped down to third place after the second “half.”
Final question category: Talk Show Hosts. Ick. We strangely decided to wager seven points on this question:
What talk show host has earned the top spot on the Harris Poll in 2012 and 2013? Our guess was not even the correct gender.
Verdict? We will play here again, but can’t commit to playing on a league level or coming every week. But the prices were right on the drinks!
