Trivia Recap June 18, 2015 (Venue Tournament – Corner Brewery)

We earned a spot to the regional Sporcle Live trivia tournament Wednesday night after slogging through a labyrinth of some rather challenging questions. In defense of our favorite bar, we wound up going toe-to-toe (or brain-to-brain, as it were) against several other very good trivia teams – including Your Resume Sucks, Ennui, Cool People and Jeff, Money Badgers, Two Trivias to Paradise, Don’t Forget to Strip Your Bartender, The Full Monty and My Wife Thinks I’m At The Gym. Nine teams in total qualified for the tournament, but only one would get to go. If we were betting folks, we sure would not have bet upon us to win that night. Go Pods!
Our trivia team lineup included longtime regulars Heather, Mike and Brad. New to our “tournament” lineup included John L., who has played with us for at least a couple of years but has never played in a tournament with us. And joining us for the very first time was Nina, a former bartender at Arbor Brewing Company Microbrewery and a player on a former Sporcle league team called “And in Second Place With 58 Points.” She humbly said before the game, “I’m not sure how much help I will be.” Perhaps in prophetic form, she also said, “We’ve got this. We’re going to win.”
And the questions…
Round One
1. Literary Characters: What is the name of the woodcarver who created Pinocchio? Easy way to start.
2. Reality TV: What co-host of The View was a contestant during the second season of Survivor? For nerd bonus point, we had to name the country in which this season was filmed. Before the game, Nina said she wasn’t strong on reality TV, except that she watched “Survivor.” Yup, she rocked this one and the bonus!
3. Commercials: In a commercial for what website does Alec Baldwin deliver the line “You know, they say TV rots your brain. That’s absurd. TV softens your brain like a ripe banana?”
John chimed in here.
4. Grammy Nominated Songs: What 1976 song earned a Grammy nomination for Vicki Sue Robinson and was later a top 40 hit for Gloria Estefan in 1994?
Funny but true story – just hours before this game began, Brad posted a link on Heather’s page about “One-Hit Wonders from the 1970s.” Heather remembered that this woman was on this list, but couldn’t come up with the song right away. And in came Nina to save the day! And because Heather remembered Brad’s post, we were able to go high points here.
5. Mythology: In Greek mythology, Jason and the Argonauts were sent on a quest for what item?
6. NBA Stars: As of 2015, who is the highest ranking retired player on the NBA career scoring list who is not currently in the Basketball Hall of Fame?
We discussed both the right guy and the wrong guy, but of course, wrote down the wrong guy. Miss for 1.
7. Canada: Which Canadian province has been nicknamed the Princess Province because of its namesake?
8. Voice Roles: In what 2001 partially animated film does Chris Rock voice the title character, a white blood cell?
And John came back from the bar just in time to remember this awful movie…thanks, man!
9. Cocktails: What vegetable is the traditional garnish for a Gibson cocktail?
Nina the (former) bartender earned our points here!
10. Weather: The Roaring 40s, Furious 50s, and Shrieking 60s are all types of what natural phenomenon?
Agonized a bit here, but got it.
Mystery Round: Third Most Populous City in a US State
because we didn’t get them all.
1. Florida: Jacksonville, Miami,…
2. Kansas: Wichita, Overland Park,…
3. New York: New York, Buffalo,…
4. Nevada: Las Vegas, Henderson,…
Missed #2.
After Round One:
11. Doug Wozniaks, 23; 10. “Shame,” 47; 9. Money Badgers, 52; 8. Seven Minutes in Kevin, 53; 6.. Don’t Forget to Strip Your Bartender and Your Resume Sucks, 57; 5. Two Trivias To Paradise, 58; 4. My Wife Thinks I’m At the Gym, 61; 3. Miskatonic U., 68; 2. Cool People and Jeff, 69; and in the lead were Ennui with 70.
Round Two
1. Artists: What influential artist and architect of the Spanish Renaissance was known by a Spanish nickname that translates literally to “The Greek?”
2. Book to Movie: What film released in 2015 is the tenth film adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks movie?
We put “The Notebook 2: Electric Boogaloo.” Miss for 1. And the burning of the low-pointers officially began here…
3. Game Shows: What short lived game show hosted by Chuck Woolery which aired on Fox from 1999 until 2000 shares its name with one of the traditional seven deadly sins?
4. Flags: Which US state’s flag depicts a farmer, a sailor, and a moose resting under a pine tree?
Lucky guess here, but for low points.
5. MLB Scandals: Which MLB team won the 1919 World Series against the Chicago White Sox, which was marred by the Black Sox scandal? Nice work, Brad!
6. #1 Songs: Name two of the three songs off Green Day’s 1994 album Dookie that reached #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. For nerd bonus point, name all three.
And Nina helped us earn our second bonus point of the night!
7. Fears: Ailurophobia is the irrational fear of what common animal? Multiple choices were horse, dog, cow, or cat. Now think about it – who has irrational fears of cows, dogs, or horses?
8. Classic TV: What are the first names of Ozzie and Harriet Nelson’s sons who also appeared on their TV show The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet? We managed to come up with one because Heather insisted that “Ricky Nelson” was a thing. But couldn’t come up with his brother’s name. Wow, a question too “old” for us! 🙂 Miss for 5.
9. Governors: Before being elected vice president, Spiro Agnew served as the governor of which east coast state? Miss for 6. We were starting to get a little nervous by this point.
10. Cars: Which division of General Motors produced models called the Canyon and the Cyclone? And a terrifying miss for 7 (commence teeth clenching!).
Mystery Round: Roman Numeral Initials
1. The Dallas Cowboys wide receiver inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2007
2. The famous lawyer who defended John T. Scopes in the Scopes Monkey Trial in 1925
3. The singer/actress who appeared on Barney and Friends as well as releasing the studio album Unbroken
4. The actress who played the mother on the sitcom How I Met Your Mother
Missed #3 and #4. Mike and his knowledge of Roman Numerals was a huge help.
Heading into the final:
13. Unnamed team, 14; 12., another unnamed team, 21; 11. Doug Wozniaks, (did not write down their score); 10. Shame!, 64; 8. Seven Minutes in Kevin and My Wife Thinks I’m at the Gym, 87; 7. Your Resume Sucks, 95; 6. Two Trivias to Paradise, 99; 5. Money Badgers, 105; 4. Miskatonic U., 109; 3. Don’t Forget to Strip Your Bartender, 111; 2. Ennui, 114; and in the lead were Cool People and Jeff with 115 points.
Final Category: Social Media
Final Question: The four most followed Twitter accounts as of June 13, 2015 all include the name of a person in their Twitter handle. Name three of those four people.
We were torn between betting zero on this and betting the full 40 points. We opted to split the difference and wager 20, since we have gotten burned on “social media” questions so many times in the past. As it turned out, no teams got it right, and the teams ahead of us wagered more than our 20 points. Victory!
Scores and standings: 4. Don’t Forget to Strip Your Bartender, 71; 3. Cool People and Jeff, 75, 2. Ennui, 76, 1. Miskatonic, 89. Go Pods!
