Trivia Recap March 10, 2015 – Maiz Mexican Cantina

Moved up from third place to second place Monday at MAIZ Mexican Cantina on trivia night thanks to two “almost perfect” games and wagering conservatively on both difficult final questions – each of which were answered correctly by just one team. Twelve venue points and 125 game points, putting us behind Little Lebowski Urban Achievers. We had a fairly strong mix of players, including Alex H., whohas played with us in a few tournaments. Received $20/two second place prizes for our efforts.
Here we go again with the questions (the photos with these posts will always have something to do with one of the questions that were asked during the night).
Game one
1. Batman – What actor starred as Batman in the 1992 film “Batman Returns?”
2. Sports firsts – Who was the first and only man to date to play in both the World Series and the Super Bowl? For nerd bonus point, name the team for which he won his first Super Bowl? Got first part (thanks Archie C.), not the bonus.
3. Finances – What international organization that oversees global finance is known by the initials IMF?
4. Audio – clip of guitar solo from song performed by the man’s group in this picture, which features an auburn-haired woman lolling about on the hood of a car while wearing a white dress. Not that we’ve ever seen that video or anything…
5. Television series – What TV series premiering in 2013 on FX features two Soviet KGB officers posing as a married American couple?
6. Elements – What element on the periodic table’s symbol shares its symbol with the postal abbreviation used for the state of Nebraska?
7. Magazine covers – What actress appeared nude on the cover of Vanity Fair when she was seven months pregnant?
8. ’00s films – In the 2006 film “Click,” in what store did Adam Sandler’s character buy the remote control central to the plot of the film?
9. Suburbs – What midwestern city’s suburbs include Waukesha, Brookfield, and West Allis? What a night for a native of that state to show up for trivia…thanks Alex (and Alissa)!
10. World leaders – According to Soviet records, which world leader was actually born in 1941 in the Soviet Union, not in Korea?
Mystery – add ’em up – sum total of all four answers is equal to the number of years between the William McKinley and John F. Kennedy assassinations.
1. Number of times San Francisco giants appeared in the World Series since 2000?
2. Number in title of TV series running from 2002 to 2006, which won an Emmy for best drama series five times?
3. Number of week days in the month of March?
4. Name of 1957 film primarily set in the a courtroom?
Miscommunication about the number of years between assassinations caused us to burp and miss two points – our only miss of the regular round.
Heading into the final – Nine teams with scores ranging from 55 to 66, with More Beer Less Pants and Little Lebowski Urban Achievers leading the pack with perfect games/66 points. We were in fifth with 64 points.
Final category: TV Love Interests
Actress Jayma Mays played the love interest of characters played by Masi Oka, Matthew Morrison and Paul Scheer in three separate series. Name two of them.
Final standings – Fifty Shades of Green starring Cthulhu and Your Mom (aka Miskatonic U.), 64 points, Touch Me Where I Pee, 85 (the only team to get this question correct, they moved up from second place).
Game two
1. U.S. states – What is the only U.S. state to contain more than one letter “D”?
2. TV teams – Known as the “Build Team,” what TV show did Kari Byron, Tory Belleci, and Grant Imahara leave in 2014?
3. Siblings – What musician had a twin brother named Jesse that was delivered stillborn just 35 minutes before his own birth in 1931?
4. Architecture – Name two of the three styles of classic Greek architecture.
5. Measurements – If something is measured in Pascals, what is it measuring (multiple choice)? Force, pressure, power, or frequency?
6. Holidays – International Workers Day, recognized May 1 in more than 80 countries worldwide has its counterpart with what U.S. federal holiday?
7. Sequels – Name one of the two sequels to the “Porky’s” franchise. For nerd bonus, name two of them (missed nerd point).
8. NHL expansion – Within two years, in what year did current Ottawa Senators play their first game in the NHL?
9. SNL hosts – Who served as host of “Saturday Night Live” on Nov. 13, 1999 while fictional rocker Chris Gaines also served as musical guest? Heather was almost ashamed for knowing this answer…
10. Board games – On a standard Scrabble board, what squares are located in each of the four corners? Our only miss up to this point.
Mystery http://www.sporcle.com/live/visual/9citiesMissed #4.
Heading into the final – Nine teams with scores ranging from 39 to 65, with a couple of members of Don’t Forget to Strip Your Bartender leading the pack (they hoisted their giant margaritas in celebration here). They played under a pseudonym, don’t recall what that pseudonym was. Something about 110 percent…We were in third with 61 points, playing under the pseudonym “Cthulhu 2: Electric Boogaloo.” This is one of Heather’s obsessions. She believes all parts 2 of movies should have the tagline “Electric Boogalaoo.” We hear there is a pill for that.
Final category – Super Bowl MVPs – Yup, we were two for two on final question categories that scared us into wagering absolutely no points that night.
Name one of the two Super Bowl MVPs who were born outside of the U.S. One was born in Canada, the other born in South Korea.
Final standings – Cthulhu 2: Electric Boogaloo, 61, Little Lebowski Urban Achievers, 84 (they were the only team knowing both of the players for that final question). Until Wednesday, go Pods!
