Trivia Recap March 31, 2015 – Maiz Mexican Cantina

Took a first-place prize on trivia night Monday at MAIZ Mexican Cantina playing with a slightly different lineup. The role of John L. (who was having a date night with his sweetie) was played by Joel V, whom we lovingly call “Pilot.” It worked out pretty well, though we could have used a 20 or 30-something female to help us out on one of the questions about “boy bands.” Ugh. Just when you think you’ve covered your bases…anyway, moving on to the questions.
Game one
1. Grammar: According to a popular Schoolhouse Rock song, the words “and,” “but,” and “or” are all which part of speech?
2. Star Wars: In the 1977 film Star Wars, who is the first character to speak a line of dialogue?
3. Boy Bands: The band *NSYNC was comprised of Justin Timberlake, Joey Fatone, Lance Bass, JC Chasez, and what fifth member?
What, it’s not Jim Croce? Balls…miss for 1. Our group of players definitely did not meet the age demographic for this question. Had it been about “New Kids on the Block?” Our female would have had at least a chance!
4. Capitals: At more than 7000 feet above sea level, which US state capital is at the highest elevation: Denver, CO; Santa Fe, NM; Boise, ID; or Phoenix, AZ? A great game for long-lost ‘Pod Joel to join us – he works as a professional pilot and remembered doing his pilot training in one of these cities (which was not the correct answer). Thanks Joel!
5. TV Firsts: What two candidates were featured in the first televised presidential debate in US history?
6. Baseball Records: Within 2, in what year did Cal Ripken, Jr. break Lou Gehrig’s record for most consecutive games played? Bonus: In what year did Ripken’s streak end? Nope, didn’t know either part of the question.
7. Science: What scientist is considered to be the father of genetics?
8. 2000s Movies: Audio clip from a trailer for a 2008 science fiction film.
Monster movie fan Mike knew this one right away. He was hoping the movie would be about Cthulhu, but he liked it even though it didn’t turn out to be Cthulhu.
9. Sayings: What common adage is often described as “anything that can go wrong will go wrong?” This was the question asked at a Toledo venue (we wish it would have been ours, as ours was a bit harder, at least for our team)
9. Fashion – Miu Miu is a line of high-fashion accessories from what fashion house? We didn’t know the answer, but apparently the Devil wears it.
10. Civil War History: Which was the last US state to leave the Union as well as the first to rejoin it: Texas, Florida, Tennessee, or Virginia?
Visual round: Missed # 1 and # 2.
Heading into the final – Ten teams with scores ranging from 20 to 56, points, with Touch Me Where I Pee and Miskatonic U. tied for first with 56 points (it was a rough round of questions for this group!).
Final category: Flags (Brad was excited to hear this category)
The national flag of the United Kingdom is a combination of the flags of three saints, the patron saints of three of the constituent parts of the United Kingdom. Name those three patron saints.
Got ’em. Final standings More Beer Less Pants 74 (they moved up from third), Miskatonic U. 76.
Game two
1. Taglines: What 1990 film used the tagline “His story will touch you, even though he can’t?” Miss for 3. And we were ashamed…
2. Character Names: What was the first name of Jeremy Piven’s character on the TV show Entourage? A bit of luck, Heather knew this, and has never watched the show. She just likes Jeremy Piven (because he was in PCU, which is one of her favorite movies).
3. Commercials: NBA Hall of Famer David Robinson has appeared in ads in 2015 for what pizza chain’s stuffed crust pizza, 20 years after appearing in ads for the same product? Bonus: what Basketball Hall of Famer appeared in the original ads for that pizza chain?
Got both. Nice work brad!
4. Holidays: Humphrey Bogart’s birth in 1899, Annie Lennox’s birth in 1954, and James Brown’s death in 2006 all occurred on which holiday?
Don’t know how we knew this, but we knew it right away.
5. Grammy Winners: What winner of the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2006 married model Chrissy Teigen in 2013?
Nope – miss for 1.
6. Tasty Treats: What is the four letter term for a baked pastry with an open top not covered by pastry dough? Nice work, Joel!
7. Super Bowl: The Green Bay Packers won the first two Super Bowls. Name one of the two teams they defeated. Brad AND Heather both came up with the answer (a truly historic moment).
8. TV Doctors: In which TV drama did actor Mandy Patinkin play a surgeon named Jeffery Geiger? And yet another TV question Heather knew about a show she has never watched. Did you guys know Mandy Pantinkin is a fabulous singer? He was in “Evita.” The more you know…
9. Bridges: The Edmund Pettis Bridge, the site of a 1965 police attack on civil rights demonstrators, is located in which Alabama city? Nice, Brad.
10. Measurements: To the nearest mile, how many miles are in 15 kilometers? Nice work from our aviator Joel.
Mystery Round: Crosswords
1. 5 letters – Freshwater fish or an Angels star
2. 6 letters – Last name of Manny’s voice actor in the Ice Age movies
3. 7 letters – Shoulder muscle named for a Greek letter
4. 10 letters – Fantasy world in a 1977 Katherine Patterson novel
Missed #4.
Heading into the final:
Nine teams with scores ranging from ??? to 61, with More Beer Less Pants leading the way. We were in second with 57 points.
Final Category: Pro Rasslin’
Final Question: Three different pro wrestlers have won the WWE Royal Rumble event in consecutive years, with each of their victories occurring in the 1990s. Hulk Hogan was the first in 1990 and 1991. Name one of the other two.
Final Standings: Miskatonic U. 57, More Beer Less Pants 78. We were glad to have “pussy bet” on this question, as we would not have known this answer.
Until Wednesday, when we again try to weave through the gauntlet of formidable (and in some cases, really, really large) teams there. Go Pods!
