Trivia Recap Aug. 27, 2015 – Corner Brewery

For the first time in about a month, we didn’t walk away with any gift cards at Arbor Brewing Company Microbrewery. Though we “almost” got a $5 third place gift card, but lost out on a tiebreaker question about golf (we knew that the team that tied with us would get it right because they had a player wearing a golf-style polo shirt). We are nothing if not trivia profilers…We still managed to hold onto our second place venue spot. After starting the season two weeks late, we’ll label that as a “comeback.” And on to the questions, thanks to Toledo trivia team Brian Williams Reporting Live.
Game One
1. Logos: What type of animal is depicted in the logo on a bottle of Elmer’s glue?
2. Fruit: Which Asian country produces the most bananas and plantains annually?
3. The Lego Movie: Which comic superhero was voiced by Channing Tatum in the 2014 film The Lego Movie?
4. Tours: Which singer embarked on her 114-show Blown Away tour in 2012 and 2013?
5. Forests: Allegheny National Forest is located in which US state?
6. TV Actresses: Which main cast member of The Good Wife has also appeared on The Big Bang Theory as Leonard Hofstadter’s mother? Three players on the team could picture this woman, and had a vague idea of her last name. The “movies” person on the team would have come up with her name had they named a couple of her movies. Only problem was, our “movies” person has never watched “Big Bang Theory” or “The Good Wife,” and the other three players haven’t seen either “Addams Family Values” or “Bowfinger,” two movies in which she appeared. Total communication breakdown. Miss.
7. Hall of Famers: In which decade was the first election of players into the Baseball Hall of Fame? Bonus: Name any player other than Babe Ruth who was part of the first election.
Got the bonus, but missed the main question.
8. Stocks: What online service trades publicly on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol P?
OK, kids, name some things that start with “P!” Yeah, we missed this one, we put “Pinterest.”
9. Animals: In biology, the term “molting” refers to what?
10. 70s Movies: Audio clip of a comedy film featuring the line “These cans are defective! They’re springing leaks!”
Mystery Round: Pop Culture Math
1. The sum of the number of films in the Men in Black series and the number of TV series Ed O’Neill has appeared in more than 100 episodes.
2. The product of the number of NBA teams Charles Barkley played for during his career and the number of volumes in JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings
3. The difference between the number retired by the New York Yankees in honor of Mickey Mantle and the number of words in the title of Led Zeppelin’s 1973 studio album
4. The sum of the number of children raised by Bernie Mac’s character on the Bernie Mac Show and the number in the title of a 1995 book by relationship counselor Gary Chapman
Amazingly, we got all of these, which is unusual for this type of mystery round. After the rotten regular round, we were happy to get those eight points.
Heading into the final:
Fifteen teams with scores ranging from 32 to 54, with Ennui taking the top spot. We were tied with the Money Badgers for third with 53 points.
Final Category: 20th Century US Presidents
Final Question: Between 1927 and 2000, there were three U.S. presidents who were NOT named Time Person of the Year while in office or in a year in which they were elected. Name one of those three. And Dave was our game MVP here for thinking of this guy…
We got into two tiebreakers with the Money Badgers for third place. The first question: In what year did Ty Cobb make his MLB debut? Both us and the Money Badgers were within the same range of the right answer. The second deciding question was about when the first U.S. open golf tournament was held. We were WAY off…Oh well, at least we gained 20 points.
Final Standings: Money Badgers, Nerd Herd, Ennui. Nerd Herd and Ennui also had to settle the game with a tiebreaker.
Game Two
1. City Names: Which Tennessee city is named after a capital city of ancient Egypt?
2. Video Games: In the first video game in the Mega Man series, released in 1987, how many different stages can a player select to play when the game begins? Bonus: Name the final boss in any of the selectable stages.
Nope. Didn’t get either part of this correct.
3. Same Name: What is Samuel L. Jackson’s middle name, which is shared by a character in a song by Jim Croce?
4. Hurricanes: As of August 20, 2015, three of the five Atlantic hurricane names that have been retired since 2010 begin with which letter: S, K, I, or P?
Great team effort, here.
5. Famous Graves: Who is laid to rest at Holy Trinity Church in England in a grave bearing the warning “…Blessed be the man who spares these stones. And cursed be he that moves my bones?”
6. Golfers: In 2015, which golfer won both the Masters and the US Open?
Again with the golf questions… 😦
7. World Geography: Four of the six largest landlocked countries in the world by total area are located on which continent?
8. TV Dramas: If its title used first names instead of last names, which TNT drama would be called “Jane and Maura?” Heather watched one episode of this show and got this.
9. Song Inspirations: According to John Lennon, the imagery in the song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” was inspired by the work of which English author?
And we were the only team in the bar to miss this. We went with another writer with a similar name who also wrote in the fantasy genre.
10. Technology: Torch, Charm, Pearl, and Storm are all discontinued mobile device models sold under which brand name?
Nice work, Dave.
Visual: them all. Another very appreciated eight points.
Heading into the final: 14 teams with scores ranging from 37 to 63, with Norfolk ‘n Chance and Ennui tied for the lead. We were in sixth with 53 points.
Final Category: The UN
Final Question: Name the five nations that are permanent members of the UN Security Council.
We wagered “strategically” on this one and got it right. Fail…a full wager would have landed us in second place. Oh well, it just wasn’t our night.
Final Standings: Nerd Herd; Don’t Forget to Strip Your Bartender, 72, (moving up from seventh) and Ennui, 83. Congrats to Ennui for taking first place in both games!
