Trivia Recap Oct. 29, 2015 – Corner Brewery

We know a few trivial facts about Ringo Starr of “The Beatles.” His inspiration for “Octopus’ Garden” (one of our favorite songs) happened while riding in a yacht with actor Peter Sellers, and learning that, yes, Octopuses build “gardens” under the sea with rocks. Isn’t that the cutest thing you’ve heard all day? 🙂 He met his wife Barbara Bach while filming the 1981 film “Caveman” (really terrible movie, BTW). We can name several songs penned by him but recorded as The Beatles. Can we name any of his hit songs as a solo artist? Apparently not, as we learned Wednesday, playing Sporcle Live Trivia with Kuma at Arbor Brewing Company Microbrewery. Worst trivia round ever, with us logging just 28 points in game one. Silver lining? We won $5 and a third place in game two, with just two players for most of the game. We like money!
On to the horrible, horrible questions. At least no teams at our bar had a perfect game….
Game One
1. Ringo – Name one of the two #1 hit songs released by Ringo Starr in the ’70s. For nerd bonus, name both. Miss.
2. Historical Figures – What historical figure married John Rolf in April, 1614?
3, ’80s TV – On Miami Vice, characters Crockett and Tubbs worked for the OCB. What does OCB stand for? None of us ever watched the show (though it had a cool Harold Faltermyer soundtrack), and we really tried to make a guess. No dice.
4. Animals – Native to the West Coast, what type of animal is a geoduck? Look this one up in google images if you’re slightly pervy…miss.
5. Mascots – Travelocity’s gnome mascot wears what color coat?
6. Numbers – Name 1/2 jersey numbers work by Michael Jordan during his career? Geoff made a really great effort on this one, but nope.
7. Animated characters – What nursery rhyme character is played by Zach Galifianakis (sp?) in the 2011 film “Puss in Boots?” Were we supposed to have seen that movie? Miss.
8. Cereal – What variety of Rice Krispies introduced in the ’90s was packaged primarily in a purple box? Wow, an actual correct guess!
9. Rap Albums – Rapper 50 Cent’s debut studio album shares its name with the title with what 2005 film about him? Missing player Dave may have helped with this one…
10. Islands – The Svalbard archipelago in the Antarctic belongs to what country? Nope. Picked wrong neighboring country.
Mystery: Before and After
1. Syndicated TV series hosted by Billy Bush and Bob Seger song.
2. Fox series starring Zoey Deschanel and ’99 film starring Winona Ryder
3. St. Louis Rams’ all-time rushing leader and writer of the Eagles’ song “Take it Easy.”
4. Pen name of “Fifty Shades of Grey” author and political commentator who appeared as himself in “Wedding Crashers” and “Old School.”
Missed #1 and #4. Nice teamwork by Geoff and Heb on #3, though…
Heading into the final: Fourteen teams with scores ranging from 27 to 55, with Ennui taking the top spot. We were scraping bottom with 28 points. But bad games have to happen sometimes! Nice to get this one out of the way during this “non-season.” At least it didn’t happen last Sunday at the tournament (whew).
Final category: Directors
What is the highest-grossing film at the U.S. box office directed by Peter Jackson that is not part of the “Lord of the Rings” or “The Hobbit” series? Way too easy for this crowd, but we snagged 20 more points for our efforts. Top teams Ted’s Mom, Money Badgers ,Ennui.
Game Two [spoiler alert] this game was much, more kind to us. Player three Geoff had to leave early in the game, leaving it down to our core spousal duo Heb and Mike, who, believe it or not, have never played as a trivia duo previously. Yes, really! One of our regulars Brad, had to miss the game because he had to have one of his dogs euthanized. So, so sad! He rarely ever misses a trivia game unless he is hospitalized or for other dog-related reasons. But we digress, moving on…
1. Government – Donald Rumsfeld held what government position from 1975-1977 and again from 2001-2006? Big points.
2. Useful products – What line of storage and serving ware helped make the “party planning” method successful? Another easy one.
3. Soccer – In what city does the MLS team the Whitecaps play? Miss for 1.
4. SNL – Audio clue we missed.
5. Debut films – What was director Sofia Coppola’s first film, released in 1999?
6. ’80s Albums (yay, the ’80s!) – What musician released an acoustic album called “Nebraska” in 1982? And again, Heb and her mom’s music collection helped out on trivia night. Judging from the number of other wrong answers mentioned by Kuma, perhaps we were one of the few getting it right. Boo ya, especially after game one.
7. Abbreviations – What does STP stand for?
8. Books What was the first name of one of the Hardy Boys? For nerd bonus, name both. Nope, miss for 3.
9. Hosts – Who hosted the reality series “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” from 2003 to 2012? Miss for 4.
10. Country Names – The island nation Dominica received its name because it was spotted on day of the week?
Visual mystery: http://www.sporcle.com/live/visual/28boys Got one of them right. Unsure which one it was…
Heading into the final: Thirteen teams with scores ranging from 31 to 61, with Ennui again taking the top spot. We were in 11th with 45 points.
Final category: Sports Families
There are two MLB players who have hit 300-plus home runs who also have fathers who did the same. Name both of those people.
Wagered zero. Final standings: Miskatonic U., 45; Ennui, 46 ,and (sorry did not catch the name of the game winner), 75. Until next time, Go Pods!
