When a trivia team has been playing together for a few years, sometimes it’s fun to mix things up – play in a different place on a different night, go for the “natural perfect” game by using the 10, 9, 8, 7… point slips in order no matter what the question (or the reverse), or the more common “solo challenge.” Send a solo player out to see how they do against other teams. We’ve seen lots of single-person teams that regularly play this way, so we thought we’d give it a shot. Our team’s captain and re-cap writer Heb ventured out Tuesday for Sporcle Live Trivia with Kuma at the very scenic Johnny’s Grill (the sunset view last night was amazing!). She didn’t walk away with any prizes, but snagged a very sexy 69 points for her single-game effort. Because sixty-nine, dudes! Good thing she didn’t stick around for the second game, because she would not have known the answer to that final question on her own, though she would have been on the right track.
The questions (for game one only)
1. Back-up bands – What beer shares its nickname with Bob Seger’s back-up band? An easy 10 points.
2. Video Games – What development company released the games Crash Bandicoot, The Last of Us and Uncharted – Activision, Blizzard Entertainment, Naughty Dog, or Valve? Nope, miss for 1.
3. Apps – What live video streaming device owned by Twitter shars it name with a device that might be found on a submarine? Good guess, but only wagered 2.
4. Paintings – What city’s school is featured in an early 16th Century fresco by Raphael? Made wrong guess, dropped the 3.
5. Politicians – What governor and 2016 presidential candidate appeared in a skit with Jimmy Fallon called “The Evolution of the Dad Dance” in 2014 on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon?” Epic fail for 9 points.
6. Oil – What lemon-scented oil derived from dried grasses is commonly used as an insect repellent?
7. TV Themes – Audio clue of a patriotic themed competition show.
8. Poems – How many lines are in a traditional limerick? For nerd bonus, what river runs through the town of Limerick in Ireland? Missed the nerd point.
9. Hollywood Locations – On what Hollywood street did River Phoenix die? Someone who was involved in a non-fatal shooting was also mentioned, but we did not catch his name.
10. Breakfast – What kind of meat was used in the original McMuffin sandwich?
Missed just three regular round questions, not too horrible! But blowing nine points? Amateur hour, ugh…
Mystery: What Person Am I? (Whew, thank goodness it wasn’t one of those horrible “progressive” mystery rounds. Those are always death).
1. Unsuccessful “American Idol” contestant who gained fame for his version of “She Bangs?” And I knew this all because of Dave’s fascination with him way back in…2004? It’s all fuzzy, but this was his favorite karaoke persona for quite a while. Ah, memories.
2. Stage name of James Newell Osterberg Jr. who was also the frontman for “The Stooges.”
3. Athlete who was the subject of the 2001 documentary “The Road to Paris.”
4. “Big Bang Theory” actor whose character has an engineering degree. There was more to this question, but didn’t bother writing it all down since I had no clue anyway. So there’s that for you…
Missed #3 and #4.
Heading into the final: Seven teams with scores ranging from 20 to 65 with More Beer Less Pants predictably taking the top spot. We were right in the middle of the pack with 49 points. Wanted to crack 50, but meh…
Final category: Presidential History (yay!)
The origin of the Democratic donkey is traced back to what 19th century president’s campaign? When some of his opponents called him a jackass, instead of rejecting the title, this president instead used the image of the animal on his campaign posters.
Got it, but so did enough teams ahead of me. Real Men of Genius and More Beer Less Pants took the top two spots.
Verdict? We will be back next week with at least a couple of more players. Mental note: ask about beer prices before ordering. Go Pods!
