Trivia Recap – Feb. 9, 2016, Maiz Mexican Cantina

A couple of ‘Pods with sights set only on warming the “bench” visited MAIZ Mexican Cantina Monday for Sporcle Trivia Nights With Charlie. No gift cards, but a respectable 130 points for the night with Lady Luck bestowing us with two very favorable geography-oriented final questions. After that horrible “put the Super Bowl performers in order” question Saturday? Yessss! Representing ‘Pods were Heather and Mike. Here are the questions:
Game One
1. Web Sites – According to its slogan, what web site is “The Front Page of the Internet?” Miss for 3, neither player is a user of this site.
2. Samples – Name one of the two ’70s songs sampled in the Kid Rock song “All Summer Long? Hm, hum a few bars and I’ll fake it? Miss for 1.
3. Ingredients – In Shakespeare’s MacBeth, the witches’ cauldron contains the toe of what amphibian? Four points.
4. Actresses – What actress played the title role in the 2005 film Nanny McPhee?
5. Novels – What Hunter S. Thompson novel is subtitled “The Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream?” FB clue, 10 points.
6. Advertising – The first television advertisement was 10-second spot selling what – jewelry, hats, watches, or glasses? Heather with right guess for 2.
7.Quarters – Which U.S. state has an image of New River Gorge Bridge? Picked a neighboring state with similar name, miss for 5.
8. TV Dramas – What isthe most recent series airing on Fox to win a primetime Emmy for best drama, doing so in 2006? Miss for 6, game not looking good at this point.
9. Shoes – A basketball player named Chuck Taylor is most closely associated with what shoe company? Eight points.
10. NFL Geography – Which NFL team in the NFC North Division plays its home games the farthest south? Our default sports person doesn’t know divisions, so miss for 7. Hey – how about we save the one-point slip for our sports question the next game – or maybe let the other player handle the slips? Ya know, just to mix it up? 🙂
Mystery – Who, What, Where – Progressive
1. I am an actress born in Spain in 1974
2. I starred with Scarlett Johansson in a Woody Allen film
3. I have been married to Javier Bardem since 2010
4. My films include “Blow” and “Vanilla Sky.”
Knew the answer on clue 1, but didn’t hand it in until clue #2 just to be safe.
Heading into the final: Ten teams with scores ranging from 22 to 66, with Tequila Mockingbird and Little Lebowski Urban Achievers tied for first. We were in seventh with 42 points. We’ll blame the road weariness of one of our players who returned home from a weekend trip that afternoon (seriously he was pretty pooped, and didn’t even have beer during the game). Trooper…
Final Category: Asian Geography
Among the four largest countries in Asia by total area, which one borders each of the other three?
Wagered 20 and got this, but so did the top two teams. Still nice to get the 20 extra points after that lousy round one 🙂
Game Two
1. Moons – Which planet is the farthest from the sun with no known moons? Mike kills this for 10. Nice!
2. Reality TV – Jay McCarroll was the winning designer on the first season of what Bravo series? No clue, miss for 2.
3. Video Games – Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm and Mists of Panderia all involve what video game series? Miss for 2 (no, we are not doing this for 1, we’re saving that for #9, now gimme that!).
4. Theme Parks – Which Las Vegas casino has an amusement park called Adventure Dome? Nope, miss for 4.
5. ’60s Albums – What rock band released albums called Strange Days, The Soft Parade, and Waiting for the Sun? Got this for 9, and “Soft Parade” is a really, really good (and strong) beer by Shorts. So that’s what they named it for!
6. Directors – Name one of the two films directed by David Fincher to receive a best director nomination? Got one, but missed the nerd by not getting the second one right, we went with “Gone Girl.”
7. Island Countries – Cabo Verde is an island nation located 350 miles off the coast of what continent? Seven points.
8. TV Themes – Audio clue of a series without voices from the early ’90s featuring a rap singer turned actor in a fish-out-of-water scenario.
9. NHL Teams – Following the 1981-1982 season, the NHL team Rockies moved east to become what eastern conference team? Missing our expert in this topic Brad, so used our one on this for the miss.
10. Stock Symbols – What automaker traders on the NYSE under the ticker symbol TM? Miss for 5.
http://www.sporcle.com/blog/visual/school28/ Got them all.
Heading into the final: Eight teams with scores ranging from 24 to 62, with Little Lebowski Urban Achievers in the top spot. We were in fifth with 48 points.
Final Category: Olympic Host Cities
What is the most recent city to host the Summer Olympic Games that is NOT its country’s national capital?
Wagered 20 and got it, but so did the top two teams. The ‘Pods will be visiting the Heidelberg tonight and one ‘Pod will be playing at the Tilted Kilt in Canton on Wednesday for a very “special” game with a completely different lineup. More about that later, Go Pods!
