Trivia Recap – Dec. 15, 2015 – Maiz Mexican Cantina

'A trio of 'Pods visited MAIZ Mexican Cantina for Sporcle Live with Rachel Sue Monday and played amongst a packed house with more teams than usual. A fund-raiser for the Corner Health Center in Ypsilanti was merged with the trivia night, with a portion of the bar tabs benefiting the center. As for the game, our team (which included Heather, Mike and Geoff, who stayed for about half of game two) got a second-place prize in game two and just barely missed out on the prize zone in game one because of some confusion about the final question. But we will explain that more later, on to the questions:
Game One
1. World Leaders - Montezuma the Second was the ninth emperor of what empire? Ten points.
2. Talent Shows - What NBC reality TV show has featured hosts Bill Bellamy, Craig Robinson and Anthony Jeselnik? For extra "nerd" point, on what sitcom did Robinson appear on from 2005 to 2013? Got the bonus but not the main question, miss for 1. Throwing Robinson's name into the mix threw us for a loop since his character also sings on that sitcom.
3. Beverages - What brand of sparkling water comes in flavors such as pomme-bayá, pamplemousse and peach pear? Agonized for a bit, but Heather remembered the correct over-priced bubbly water (the Kroger brand is so much cheaper!) for the points, but we went low for 3.
4. '80s Movie Characters - What is the name of Drew Barrymore's character in the 1982 film "E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial?" Heather remembered this for 9 points.
5. Logos - What color is the flower-shaped item on the cactus logo for Qdoba? Made right guess for 4.
6. Hip-Hop - Who was the third member of the group that included Joseph "Rev. Run" Simmons and Darryl McDaniels? Nope, miss for 2. Not even sure our rap music guy Dave, who was absent, would have gotten it.
7. Olympics - What country failed to win a single gold medal during the 1976 Summer Olympics which it hosted? Canada, Australia, China, or Soviet Union? Made right guess for 6.
8. Bodies of Water - What Cuban body of water was named "Puerto Grande" by Christopher Columbus when he landed there in 1494? A bit of debating, but we got it for 5.
9. Subtitles - What is the four-word subtitle for the third "Terminator" movie released in 2003? Eight points.
10. Blood - Which blood type is called the universal recipient? There was more wording to this question, but this was the basic gist of it, we missed it for 7. Bloody hell! :)
Mystery: Fun with Glass (each response will have the word "glass" in the answer).
1. First opponent in Mike Tyson's "Punchout."
2. 1944 play by Tennessee Williams
3. 1979 single by Blondie
4. 2014 reality show that aired for one season featuring a group of 14 contestants living together
Got them all. Though we were hoping "Philip Glass" would be one of the answers. ;)
Heading into the final: 17 teams (yes, way more than usual!) with points ranging from 20 to 64, with Tequila Mockingbird holding the top spot. We were tied for third with 58 points with two other teams.
Final category: Superhero Films
As of 2015, four Academy Award-winning actresses have appeared in Batman films. Name three of the four of those actresses. Note: none of those actresses won their Oscars for their Batman roles. There was another qualifier added to this question that for some strange reason totally went by us, which caused us to put down an actress that was incorrect. "The movie must feature Batman as the title character." It's a bummer when these things happen, but these things happen, and there is no crying in trivia! We actually knew all four of the correct ones, too, but went with the "Monster's Ball" winner who appeared in that horrible, horrible movie whose name will not be uttered here. Had we known about the extra qualifier, we would not have made the mistake! Moving on, because game two is another game! And that was our lame attempt at parodying that famous line from "Gone with the Wind." Did not catch game winners for game 1.
Game Two
1. World War 2 - In 1943, what country declared war on the Nazi side just one month after surrendering to Allied Forces? Mike all over this for 10 points.
2. Beatles - What song off the "Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band" album opens with the line "I read the news today, oh boy?" Heather for 9.
3. College Football - Edgerrin James, Kellen Winslow 2 and Sean Taylor all played college football for what university? Nice work Geoff for 8 points!
4. Buildings - A staircase nicknamed "The Rocky Steps" in Philadelphia leads to what building? For extra "nerd" point, within 10, how many of those steps are there? Missed both for 1.
5. Video Games - The original protagonist in what video game series named Commander Sheperd is trying to save the species from a master alien race? Got it for 7 (thanks FB clue!).
6. Actors - What actor's filmography includes "The Fantastic Four," "Fruitvale Station," and "Creed?" A bit too recent for our movie generalist, miss for 2.
7. Organizations - ASPCA is an organization dedicating to preventing what? Six points.
8. Audio clue of theme song from HBO series featuring mob-related hijinks and Steve Buscemi. Miss for 3.
9. '80s Albums - What 1984 Madonna album was her first to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts? Got this for 5. Thanks, Sporcle for all of these '80s questions, you must've heard our prayers, lol!
10. Animals - What is the name of the term of a young goat offspring? Got this for 4.
