Trivia Recap – May 4, 2017 – The Wurst Bar

A foursome of ‘Pods plus a “hired gun” (aka Scott) did battle with some wily questions Wednesday in our My Trivia Live game at The Wurst Bar. Who knew that the World Cup trophy had another name besides the World Cup? Apparently, not us! Pssst…it’s not Lionel Messi, George Best, Pele, or Diego Maradona! We won a second place/$20 gift card, which we were happy to get after all of the questions we missed! And the questions…
Round One
1. Great lakes -On the shores of what Great Lake would you find Cleveland?
2. Colors – What color is complementary to orange on the color wheel? Miss for 3. We completely misunderstood the question…
3. In the News – What was the name of the baby giraffe that caused an Internet frenzy when it was born in Harpersville, NY?
Round Two
1. Education – In what state would you find the U.S. Naval Academy?
2. Songs- What song was originally recorded and written by Otis Redding but later made into a hit by Aretha Franklin in 1967? Our first solo “hit” of the night for our “hired gun,” nicely done…
3. U.S. Cities – What U.S. city is named after a capital city in ancient Egypt? For an extra three points bonus, what major U.S. city’s name was originally “Trimont?” Did not attempt to answer this one.
Round Three
1. Artists – Who created the “water lily” series of about 250 water color paintings?
2. Video Games – What former NFL player’s name appears on a sports-related video game series that is thought to be a curse to the players who appear on the boxes? This question is heavily abbreviated…but we got it.
3. Novels – What John Steinbeck novel chronicles the life of the Joad family?
Halftime – Movie Moms
Identify the names of the actresses playing mothers of the following characters in the following movies:
1. Forrest Gump’s mother in the 1994 film “Forrest Gump”
2. Seth Rogen’s mother in the 2012 film “Guilt Trip.”
3. The bride’s mother in the 2008 film “Mamma Mia!”
4. The mother of the children in the 2001 film “The Others”
We came up with three of these right away, but our “hired gun” nailed the right guess for #2 (after a little bit of discussion about whether this actress was too old to play this character), so we got all 10 points for this. Woot!
Sixteen teams…scores 13 to 37, with Jet in first. We were in third with 34 points.
Round Four
1. Songs – As a songwriter, what is Bruce Springsteen’s only number one hit? Newsletter clue.
2. States- How many U.S. states border the Pacific Ocean?
3. Spacecraft – What was the name of the European spacecraft that made observations of Halley’s Comet in 1986? We called “shenanigans” on this question, and it was thrown out.
Our replacement question:
3. What was the name of the World Cup trophy before being replaced in 1974? Nope, miss for 2.
Round Five
1. Movies- What was the name of the astronaut played by Tom Hanks in “Apollo 13?”
2. Sports – Willie O’Ree was the first black player to play for what NHL team? Flipped a coin between two choices…turns out neithe of those were right! Yes, we really did flip a coin here…
3. Geography – How many states are there in the Federated States of Micronesia? Miss for 4. Comment “It’s not even a ‘real’ country anyway…the only countries that matter in Oceania are Australia and New Zealand. No, Papua New Guinea, you don’t matter, either.” Bunch of littlle useless island nations. You don’t matter either, Fiji! Of course we’re kidding! Kiribati, Tuvalu, Nauru, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Marshall Islands..you’re all important! Dang ,which one am I missing?
Round Six
1. Greek Mythology – What bird was award the 100 eyes of Argus? Miss…

Final category – Game Shows
What was the name of the TV game show that returned to television in 2000 with Maury Povich as the host? “Hired gun” came up with possible answer right away, then we started thinking of another possibility. Right before we had to hand in our slips, we decided to go with HG’s original thought on the answer, which turned out to be correct.
Final scores: Urethra Franklin, 92; ‘Pods, 120, and ???, 122.
Until next time, which will be tonight at Original Gravity. As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, John Madden!
