Trivia Recap – June 19, 2017 – YpsiAlehouse

Sometimes the pub trivia scene is kind of like making spaghetti – throwing the cooked pasta at the wall to see what sticks. We’ve been “experimenting” with different trivia spots over the past year with different players in the mix and have finally managed to start figuring some things out. Over the past year, we’ve played Sporcle Live games regularly at the YpsiAlehouse, Original Gravity Brewing Co., Sticks, and Johnny’s Grill. And we’ve learned that not all trivia spots are created equally – some just work better for our team than others. Some spots work fine if we can get a “#3” in the mix and we just sit and chill at the bar, like Johnny’s Grill. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to get three players out to Johnny’s for a couple of weeks – and also haven’t been very good at getting final questions correct there, either!! Some spots are fine for 1-2 players sitting at the bar, but not as good if sitting at one of the tables, like OG. Some spots work good for bringing three players or more, and are not so hot for solo players or duos. Well, since we posted our highest scores last year at the YpsiAlehouse, and posted our highest score of the season so far there Sunday night, it appears that the Alehouse is a good “team” place to play! We don’t plan to focus on “winning” a Sporcle tournament spot after this season, but it’s still a nice trivia spot for the nights when at least three of us can make it out. We finished with 139 points/no prizes (barely edged out of prizes in game two). This time, our team was ‘repped by the “Three Amigos,” aka myself, Mike and Brad, who was definitely the MVP of the game! And the questions…
Game One
1. Legal Dramas – What title character did Calista Flockhart play in a legal drama that aired between 1997 and 2002? 10
2. Cars – What automaker makes the mid-size SUV called the 4Runner? Not real confident, but got it for 3.
3. Universities – MiskatonicUniversity is a fictional school that first appeared in a 1922 sotry by what horror fiction author? And this understandably got a reaction out of the other teams in the room…well played, Sporcle! Now how about that H.P. Lovecraft “theme night?” 🙂 JK, of course, you can’t very well do a theme night if only one team shows up! 9
4. Song Lyrics – What 2011 Katy Perry single mentions the band Radiohead, singer/songwriters Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash in its lyrics? Even host Sporcle and Shine with Emily said she had never heard of this song…and she is probably a little more “hip” to the modern music scene than us. Which does not say much, in the case of our team! Miss for 1.
5. Solar System – Launched by NASA in 2017, the space probe “Dawn” is currently in orbit around Ceres, which is the largest object in which part of the solar system? Mike all over this one…
6. Directorial Debuts – The 2004 film “Dawn of the Dead” marked the directorial debut of what director, who has gone on to direct several superhero movies? It took me a little bit, but I remembered his name for 5.
7. TV Finales – Audio clue from TV series that debuted in the 1980s, for which a bar was the settng.
8. Sports Teams – The Charlotte Hornets, San Diego Gulls ad the Utica Comets are all professional minor league teams in what sports? And we totally wasted our re-rack here, after we handed in our slip, it occurred to me that “checkers” was a vital clue. And the re-rack would have been more well used on the next question….
9. Apples – Name two of the three most purchased apples in the United States according to the U.S. Apple Association? Initially had all three of these right, but changed our answer…miss for 6. How do you like them apples? Uh, not very much! 😦
10. Web Sites – What social media web site was co-founded by Tom Anderson in 2003? And what a waste of our two-point slip…easy peasy.
Mystery – Add ‘Em Up – Sum total will be 25 based on the following clues
1. Jersey number worn by LeBron James during his time with the Miami Heat
2. Number of presidents who died in office
3. Number of different playing pieces in a game of chess
4. Stage name of a performer with hits called “100 Years” and “The Riddle.”
Missed #1 and #4.
Scores – Whitmore Lake Wizards, 37; Goof Troop, 40; Chief Running with Scissors 41; One is the Loneliest Number 45; Corn Fritters, 52; It’s Daddy Daughter Day at Deja Vu (aka ‘Pods), 57, and Teamy McTeamface, 62.
Final Category – Number One Hits
In 2017, what became the first song primarily in Spanish to reach number #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart since 1996?
We wagered zero on this. Congrats to teams Chief Running With Scissors, who moved up from fifth to second with 61 points, and Teamy McTeamface, who also got this, ending up with 78 points.
Game Two
1. Money – From 1909 to 1958, in addition to words, what was depicted on the reverse side of a U.S. penny? Brad was all over this…10
2. Transportation – Desert Wind, National Limited and the Pioneer were passenger times which were at one time operated by what company? Miss for 1.
3. Food Network – What chef was the star of the Food Network program called “Throwdown,” which aired from 2006 to 2010? Thank goodness for FB clues…9
4. Power Ballads – What band released the 1984 single “Sister Christian,” which hit #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts? And Mike goes on one of his patented music rants (seriously, he hates 97.9 percent of all music he hears). But even I will agree this one is pretty terrible! What’s your price for flight? What does that even MEAN? Are you at an airline ticket counter or making a lame attempt at being “deep?” Dear Cthulhu, please don’t let this song get stuck in my head for the rest of the day! Ugh…
5. Ranks – Which U.S. Naval rank is highest – commander, captain, admiral, or real admiral? Mike and Brad were in disagreement here, I said, “Go with whatever Brad says, his dad was a Navy man.” We got this for 7. Now had the category been “Army Ranks,” I would’ve said go with whatever Mike suggests (son of an Army man).”
6. Languages – Name one of the two “official” languages of Iraq. Name both for an extra “nerd” bonus point. Missed the bonus, though we did consider the right language for 6 points.
7. Co-Stars – What is, to date, the only film to star both Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington? 5.
8. Religion – Most followers of Jainism live in what country? Brad with right guess here, 4.
9. Pro Wrestling – Pro Wrestler and WWE Hall of Famer Jake Roberts is best known by what nickname? Brad all over this one too…
10. Novels – What author released her “Lives of the Mayfair Witches” trilogy in the 1990s? Correct guess for 2.
Mystery – https://www.sporcle.com/blog/visual/state618/ Missed #1.
Scores – Goof Troop, 39; ???, 52; Chief Running with Scissors, 55; One is the Loneliest Number, 57; Whitmore Lake Wizards, 61; ‘Pods, 62; Corn Fritters, 65; and Teamy, 66 (they played under the name Waiting for Gal Gadot…nicely played).
Final Category – Animals
The camelids are members of a biological family that includes seven living species, including dromedary camels, Bactrian camels, and wild Bactrian camels.
Name 2 of the other 4 species in this family.
What a night to play with our “zoologist” Brad. Too bad the question didn’t ask for at least three of these animals, or we might have had a shot at prize money! He could name all four of these animals…
Final Standings – 85, Corn Fritters; ’86, Teamy.
Until next time, which will be Wednesday at The Wurst Bar. We’ll be taking the next couple of nights off from trivia, but there may be some “Jeopardy!” viewing involved, lol! As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, all of you mullet-sporting men in “Night Ranger.”
